HUNTINGTON, W.Va – In a bit of a deja vu moment Thursday, Marshall sophomore Bailey Fisher stepped up for a free kick just outside the Hoops Family Field 18-yard box.
Fisher, the Hurricane native, buried a decisive goal from a similar spot in the Herd's win over High Point last week in Huntington.
In the 47th minute of the MU's (3-0-1) slugfest with Ohio (2-1-1), the forward nailed the strike past the Bobcat keeper to once again put the Herd ahead for good in a 1-0 victory.
The sophomore's team-leading third goal of the year gave the Herd its first win over OU since 2017. It also gives Marshall its longest-unbeaten run to open the year since the 2009 season.
What was different in Thursday's victory, was Marshall goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth making a season-high nine saves in goal. The sophomore keeper made a trio of clutch second-half saves to keep Coach Michael Swan's side ahead.
"Between the lines, every player that stepped on the field put their body on the line against a physical team who is going to be really good in the MAC," Marshall Head Coach Michael Swan said. "But the star of the show tonight was Alexis [Wolgemuth]. Bailey [Fisher] was superb with a fantastic strike but I think the team is all looking at Alexis tonight and giving her applause."
Wolgemuth has already been named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week once for the young season. She is making a case for all-time great marks with her 23 stops after four matches.
"I thought our defense played amazing tonight," Alexis Wolgemuth said. "There were so many opportunities that Ohio had that could have been goals that we had players standing in the way, blocking shots, stopping crosses, so a lot of credit definitely goes to them as well."
