Jones, Bilby each finish T-4 to lead Thundering Herd at Guyan Golf & Country Club
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's Men's Golf team got its 2023 fall season off to a successful start, surging on the final holes to earn a second-place finish at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational on Tuesday.
Marshall graduate Tyler Jones led the Thundering Herd's final surge with a 5-under 66 that helped the team move ahead of Morehead State in the last stretch for the runner-up finish.
Jones and junior Ryan Bilby each finished the tournament in a tie for fourth place at 8-under.
"I am very, very pleased with our guys," Marshall head coach Matt Grobe said. "It was the second day in a row that I didn't feel like we got off to a great start, but the thing I love about this team is the fight they've got. These kids just fight and scrap for every stroke."
Jones really got things going late, shooting a 30 on the back nine, courtesy of a stretch in which he birdied four out of five holes, including three straight on Nos. 16, 17 and 18.
The veteran Jones said that Tuesday's final round was all about being patient.
"I got a little frustrated early, but bounced back with birdies after I made a couple bogeys and I really got going on the back nine, which was nice," Jones said. "I think on No. 14, I hit a wedge and made the putt. I parred the next hole, but went on to birdie the next three. I felt like I got into a good rhythm, finally."
Jones was not the only Marshall player to get things going late on Tuesday.
Bilby overcame a tough front side of his round by birdieing four of his final eight holes, shooting a 31 on the back for a 1-under 70 that helped him match Jones at 8-under for the tourney.
Joseph Kalaskey and Andrew Wyss each birdied their final holes of the day to each shoot Even-par 71. More importantly, the pair of birdies provided the separation down the stretch for a two-shot lead over Morehead State for outright second place in the tournament.
"At the end, you saw Tyler finish with all those 3s and Bilby shoot 31 on the back and Andrew and Joseph birdieing their last holes," Grobe said. "It's a character-driven team that I love coaching."
Marshall will take next week off before traveling to Nashport, Ohio, on Sept. 25-26 for the 2023 Virtues Intercollegiate, which is co-hosted by Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green at The Virtues Golf Club.
