First road trip of fall 2023 season takes Herd to The Virtues Golf Club in Ohio
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Men's Golf is headed to The Virtues Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday for The Virtues Intercollegiate, which is co-hosted by Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green.
Marshall is one of 17 teams scheduled to take part in the 54-hole event, which gets underway on Monday with a shotgun start for the first round at 8:30 a.m.
For the Thundering Herd, it will be the second event of the fall and the first road trip of the season. Marshall finished second in the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational two weeks ago at Guyan Golf and Country Club.
"We are really excited about this week," Marshall Men's Golf Coach Matt Grobe said. "We saw a lot of good golf at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and we are looking forward to getting our first tournament on the road started."
Participants will play 36 holes on Monday with the second round starting directly after the conclusion of the first round. The final 18 holes will take place on Tuesday morning to determine the champion.
Tyler Jones and Ryan Bilby lead the team into the tournament after both tied for fourth place at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
"Tyler is coming off a strong first tournament and just made it through Pre-Qualifying of the PGA Tour, finishing second in a strong field," Grobe said. "Ryan continued his great play from this summer with a fourth-place tie at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational."
Others who will compete for the Thundering Herd include Joseph Kalaskey, Christian Boyd and Clayton Thomas.
"Joseph had a solid top-20 at the Marshall Invitational and is playing really good golf right now," Grobe said. "Christian won the qualifier after a good summer and solid first tournament. Clayton grabbed the final qualifying spot and has done nothing but improve since showing up on campus."
Grobe added that the year's first road trip allows the players to continue to build on a chemistry that has helped the team improve steadily with guys pushing each other.
"We are really excited for this opportunity to compete and grow as a team," Grobe said.
