HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (14-14, 5-10 SBC) opened the weekend with a four-set victory over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-18, 5-10 SBC) Thursday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
Â
The Herd won the contest, 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23.
Â
"Offensively, we didn't do as well as we would have liked to, but in the moments that we absolutely needed it, they came through," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said. "You've got Brynn (Brown), Sarah (Stratton) and (Olivia) Fogo, all seniors. It's their last weekend. That's how they play and how they train, hard. We were proud to get them the win."
Â
Marshall finished with a pair of student-athletes registering double-doubles as Brynn Brown finished with a match-high 36 assists and 17 digs as Audrey Geer finished with 12 digs and 11 kills, tied for the team-high in the match with Beatrice Ciccarelli. Kenzie Schoenhardt led MU with 25 digs in the victory.
Â
The Herd found itself down 13-8 about midway through the first set and trailed from the opening serve. However, MU found a way to fight back by capturing nine of the next 12 points to take a 17-16 lead on a Schoenhardt service ace and force a Golden Eagle timeout. The Herd didn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way taking the opening frame 25-20.
Â
In a set that came down to the wire, Marshall trailed Southern Miss 21-17 late in the second. But with a pair of kills by Ciccarelli, a kill from Olivia Fogo, a block by Sarah Stratton, a service ace from Sarah Wadsworth with some Golden Eagle errors, sent MU on an 8-2 run tie the set 23-23. Then a solo block from Ciccarelli with a USM attacking error completed the comeback, 25-23, and gave The Herd a 2-0 lead.
Â
After falling 25-19 in the third, Marshall trailed the visitors 6-3 early in the fourth, but a 3-0 run concluded with a kill by Fogo evened it at 6-6. Three points later, The Herd took its first lead since the opening point at 7-6 on a block assist by Geer and Stratton. MU eventually took a five-point lead, 19-14, on a Stratton kill. Although the Golden Eagles grinded back, The Herd held them off as a Fogo kill sealed the set, 25-23, and match with her ninth kill of the contest.
