BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (13-14, 4-10 SBC) saw a comeback fall short falling to the App State Mountaineers (16-7, 10-2 SBC) in five sets in Boone, North Carolina.
The Mountaineers won the contest, 25-17, 25-21, 24-26, 23-25, 10-15.
"I'm so proud of this group for battling against the east division champs after getting swept last night," Herd Volleyball Head Coach Ari Aganus said. "Every day we are learning and getting better no matter what type of adversity comes our way. Audrey (Geer) and Olivia (Fogo) held us down on the outside and Marae (Reilly) and Beatrice (Ciccarelli) stayed steady in the middle for us. We are so excited to get back to practice and take on southern miss at home."
With a team-leading 17 kills and 11 digs, Audrey Geer registered a double-double in the match as Olivia Fogo also picked one up 11 kills and 11 digs. Brynn Brown finished with a team-high 40 assists.
The Herd fell in the first to sets 25-17 and 25-21 and trailed 5-1 early in the third, but wasn't ready to go down without a fight. Marshall took 11 of next 16 points to jump on top 12-10 after a kill from Sarah Stratton. While App State battled back to tie it 24-24 late, kills from Geer and Fogo sealed the third 26-24 to send it to a fourth.
MU was down 32 early in the fourth, but took a 4-3 advantage and never looked back in the frame. Marshall held as big of a lead in the fourth at a six-point margin twice, before taking set on 25-23 on a kill by Stratton to force an all deciding fifth set. The Herd hit a match-high .364 in the frame.
The beginning of the fifth was a see-saw affair seeing the two sides trade the first 12 points. The Mountaineers held off MU's charge taking the deciding set 15-10.
