Kalaskey’s 67 leads strong final day for Marshall in first team event of Spring 2024

Final Results

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Marshall Men's Golf senior Joseph Kalaskey shot a 5-under 67 to lead a strong final day for the Thundering Herd, who shot up the leaderboard to finish fourth in the team standings at the 2024 Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.

The Thundering Herd also got a pair of top-20 finishes from Tyler Jones (-6, T-13th) and Ryan Rilby (-5, T-16th) to leave Arizona with momentum.

"It was a great first tournament for us as a team to start the spring," Marshall Men's Golf coach Matt Grobe said. "I am so proud of this group! They work so hard and it is fun to watch all that hard work pay off with a good tournament."

Marshall started the day tied for 8th place in the team standings, but powered by Kalaskey's final-round 67, the Thundering Herd quickly vaulted past four other teams to finish in the upper echelon of the 20-team field.

Kalaskey was even through his first seven holes, but went on a stretch in which he went birdie-birdie-eagle on Hole Nos. 9 to 11 to propel his round.

Bilby continued his consistent play as one of only 11 players in the field with all three rounds under par as he accounted for seven birdies on the day – the final being crucial on the par-4 No. 5 as he dropped in a birdie that proved to be the difference in margin of the Thundering Herd jumping Howard for 4th place outright.

Jones continued his impressive play with a 1-under 71 in which he carded three birdies. Over his last 45 holes of the tournament, Jones had just one hole worse than par – an incredible streak over the course of a tournament.

"Joseph played great today with an impressive 67 and Tyler continued his strong play as he and Ryan Bilby both moved into the top-20," Grobe said. "Every golfer we had carded a round under-par this week, which is really great to see."

Marshall has a short turnaround now as the team returns for a few days before heading to the 2024 Peoples Championship, which takes place March 7-9 at Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons, Georgia.
