Herd Baseball Drops Series at App State

Vogelsong hits team-high sixth homer

BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall University Baseball team (9-18, 3-6 Sun Belt) dropped the series finale in seven innings to the App State Mountaineers (17-8, 5-4 Sun Belt), 19-2, in Boone, North Carolina, on Saturday.

"We obviously didn't pitch well, but we had a few chances on defense to help out the pitching staff and we were not able to make those plays," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the ballgame. "Their starting pitcher beat our bats with a good fastball and being ahead in the count. Disappointing because we started the day with an opportunity, and we did not take advantage of it.  Back at it on Tuesday at home with a very good Virginia Tech team."

Elijah Vogelsong tallied his team-high sixth homer of the season with two-outs in the sixth, scoring Owen Ayers with the blast.

Reaching base in all three of his plate appearances, AJ Havrilla registered a pair of singles and a walk in the series finale.

Out of the bullpen, Peyton Schofield threw three hitless innings striking out four Mountaineers.

App State used three big innings, scoring five runs in the first, 10 in the second and four in the sixth for its 19 runs.
