HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (10-18, 4-6 Sun Belt) picked up a series opening win, 7-1, over the Texas State Bobcats (15-15, 4-6 Sun Belt) on Friday night at Jack Cook Field.
"Certainly, we hit some balls out of the ballpark and those are always fun, but what coach is excited about is the little things we did," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "We moved runners over. We got a dirt ball read. We got some stolen bases, and we got some hits when we needed them."
Jack Firestone went 3-for-4 at the dish with a pair of extra-base hits, a double and home run, to go with three RBI. Cam Harthan and Eddie Leon also registered multi-hit games as Leon also had a double.
With 7.0 innings on the bump, Drew Harlow earned his fifth win of the season allowing just one run, unearned, on four hits and no walks with six strikeouts. Nicholas Weyruch came out of the bullpen to finish the game with two no-hit frames with four punchouts.
The Herd tallied runs in each of the first four innings. Owen Ayers gave MU the early lead with a solo homer, his sixth of the season, in the bottom of the first. Firestone then brought home Harthan with a single in the second followed by a leadoff homer in the third by Caden Kaiser. Leon then singled home AJ Havrilla in the fourth.
Firestone made it 5-1 Marshall by scoring Harthan with a double in the sixth and scored later in the inning on a passed ball to make it 6-1.
The graduate student tallied the final run of the contest with a solo blast in the eighth.
