HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Behind a complete game shutout from Bryce Blevins, the Marshall University Baseball team (11-18, 5-6 Sun Belt) took Saturday's contest over the Texas State Bobcats (15-15, 4-6 Sun Belt) 5-0 to clinch the series on Saturday afternoon at Jack Cook Field. MU is now 4-0 in series at Jack Cook Field.
Saturday marked the first complete game shutout by a Herd starting pitcher since March 18, 2018, by Will Ray in a 6-0 win over UAB.
"We had a sacrifice bunt, some sacrifice flies and we had Bryce Blevins today, that's all it took," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the win. "Bryce was outstanding. He did a great job of mixing his pitches on both sides of the plate, getting ahead in the count. Just masterful pitching."
In the gem of an outing from the sophomore lefty, Blevins allowed just five baserunners on four hits and a walk while striking out six Bobcats.
"I knew from the get-go warming up, that today was a good day, especially with the four pitches I have, that they were all going to work for me," Blevins said after his performance. "I knew after last night's big win that my job was to go out there and compete, like I always do, and get us another win."
The Herd offense put runs on the board early for Blevins to pitch with a lead. Elijah Vogelsong led off the bottom of the second with a walk and Tre Hondras followed with a single through the right side.
After Cam Harthan moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, AJ Havrilla smoked a single through the left side to score both Vogelsong and Hondras to make it 2-0 Marshall.
Owen Ayers then legged out a double on a hit to right center, extending his hit streak to nine games, and moved to third on a wild pitch to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Gio Ferraro drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch to put a pair in scoring position with no outs. Vogelsong and Hondras followed by each bringing a runner home on a pair of sacrifice flies to make it 4-0 Herd.
Havrilla then brought home Vogelsong with a two-out double down the left-field line in the bottom of the eighth for an insurance run to make it 5-0 on his career-high third RBI of the game.
With a single in the sixth, Harthan extended his on-base streak to 16 games and has recorded a hit in 12 of his last 13 contests.
Hondras is tied for second on the team after recording his eighth multi-hit game of the season.
