Herd Softball Opens Marshall March Madness Thursday with Updated Schedule

MUSB hosts Ball State, Indiana State and Notre Dame over the weekend
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University softball hosts Marshall March Madness over the weekend at Dot Hicks Field.
Due to the weather forecast, the weekend's schedule has been altered, which can be viewed on Herdzone.com HERE.
The updated schedule includes Coach Morgan Zerkle's side hosting Ball State at 5 p.m. Thursday, before hosting the Cardinals again Friday as the start of a doubleheader with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to follow.

Coach Morgan Zerkle
- On June 26, 2023, Morgan Zerkle was named the 5th head coach in the history of the Marshall softball program.
- Zerkle - the Milton, West Virginia native - collected an abundance of team-records for Marshall as a player from 2014-17. Zerkle has spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio).
- On coaching for Marshall, Zerkle said, "I am feeling immense gratitude, joy, pride and emotion as I come back to Huntington – my home – to lead the Herd, I can't wait to get started."
PRE-GAME NOTES
- Marshall's Destiny Washington had an efficient opening weekend at home. The freshman hit .500 with two doubles and two RBI.
- Kaleea Washington picked up a pair of wins in the circle last weekend. Her and Bub Feringa shared the bulk of the innings at the Thundering Herd Invite, with 16 strikeouts between the two.
- With the first set of NCAA DI RPI rankings coming out Monday, the Herd has the fourth-highest RPI in the Sun Belt Conference.

ABOUT THE BALL STATE CARDINALS
- Ball State is 10-11 on the season. The Cardinals have faced a pair of SBC opponents, going 0-2 against JMU and splitting against App State.
- Redshirt-Junior McKayla Timmons has slugged her way to a .393 average in 2024. After Tuesday, the catcher has 10 home runs on the season, tied for second nationally.
ABOUT THE INDIANA STATE SYCAMORES
- Indiana State is 11-9 coming to Huntington, with a pair of wins over Ohio last weekend in Tennessee.
- In nine appearances this season, sophomore pitcher Megan Asher has a 1.66 ERA with 11 strikeouts.
ABOUT THE NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH
- Notre Dame is 8-8 with an RPI slightly above the Herd. The Fighting Irish will be the fourth NCAA Tournament team from a year ago MU will have faced so far this season.
- The Irish were picked 5th in the ACC Preseason Poll. Senior Karina Gaskins was named to the All-ACC Infield Team. She is batting .412 while holding an NCAA DI-best .672 OBP.
- Marshall is 2-0 all-time against the Fighting Irish.
