Herd Drops Wild Game to Open Marshall March Madness

Marshall hosts Ball State and Notre Dame Friday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall thundered back from seven runs down to temporarily take a lead on Ball State, before falling to the Cardinals, 13-9 in a back-and-forth contest Thursday evening at Dot Hicks Field.

The Herd trailed 6-0 in the 4th, and 8-3 in the 6th, before tallying six runs in the frame to go up 9-8 entering the 7th.

The highlight of MU's six hits in the 6th was junior Rielly Lucas's go-ahead RBI triple. The second-career three-bagger for the Huntington native scored Bella Gerlach and Kasia Parks who had RBI knocks of their own in the rally.

The first big hit in the 6th came from graduate transfer Reagan Glanz, who had three RBI in the contest with a two-run home run in the 4th.

In total, four Herd players had multiple hits, with Brooklyn Ulrich and Bub Feringa each scoring a run. All nine offensive hitters had a knock for Coach Morgan Zerkle's side.

The struggles came for Marshall in the circle, who allowed five in the decisive 7th. Ball State slugger McKayla Timmons had two home runs to bring her total to 12 on the season, a number which ranks 2nd-nationally.
