POINT CLEAR, Ala. – Marshall Women's Golf made the biggest surge up the leaderboard jumping four places into fifth place at the 2024 Sun Belt Championships at The Lakewood Club in Point Clear, Alabama.
Marshall had the best overall round of any team on Day Two of the 2024 SBC Championships, carding a +4 as a team to ascend within two shots of fourth place heading into the final day of stroke play.
"It was an awesome day for the Herd!" Marshall Women's Golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "We played really well and put ourselves in a good spot for tomorrow's round. I'm so proud of them."
Following the stellar round, Marshall has three golfers in the top-15, led by Kasey McIlvaine, who shot a second consecutive 1-over 73 to place herself in a tie for eighth – just two shots off the lead.
The day was led by sophomore Olivia Kochan, who carded one of only three rounds under par with her 1-under 71 that led the Herd.
Kochan started strong with a pair of birdies on each nine while scoring well to move into a tie for 12th place at 3-over.
Just behind her is Emily McLatchey, who finished with a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to sit at 4-over for the tournament, good for a tie for 15th.
In addition to the trio in the top-15, one of the team's best rounds of the day belonged to Abbey Bull, who finished with a team-high five birdies to card a 1-over 73, which was huge toward Marshall moving up the team standings.
Marshall's ascent within two shots of fourth place was critical with the new format for the Sun Belt Championships.
Following Wednesday's final round of stroke play, the top four teams advance to Thursday's Match Play Semifinals with the two winners later playing in Thursday's Match Play Championship.
Marshall's momentum is a great asset to have going into the final day on Wednesday.
"We showed that we can go low with any team here," Burkhammer said. "We just have to continue to play well and avoid mistakes to keep moving forward."
Round 3 is expected to get underway at 9:00 a.m. ET/8:00 a.m. CT. You can follow along with Live Scoring or watch the ESPN+ coverage.
