West Virginia native broke school and conference 10K record in Raleigh last week
NEW ORLEANS – For the third time this season, Marshall graduate senior Abby Herring has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week. The league announced Herring's honor Wednesday, her fifth such award combined between cross country and track and field during the 2023-24 athletic calendar.
Herring raced a time of 33:08.07 in track's longest singular event, the 10,000 meter run.
Her mark is not only the seventh school record the Parkersburg, West Virginia native currently holds, it is a new top mark in Sun Belt Conference history. Herring's time last Friday broke a conference record set in the event in 2017 by Coastal Carolina's Annie Bothma (33:37.91).
"Abby is a great example of what we look for in our student athletes," Director of Track and Field Keith Roberts said. "Everyone on the outside sees her results but they don't get to witness her day-to-day actions. She consistently does the little things right and that is what put her in this position. She deserves every honor that she has and will receive this season."
Herring became the first female in Marshall University history to qualify for NCAA Cross Country Nationals last November.
"It's been a blast watching Abby progress and continue to push the limits on what she can accomplish," Distance Coach Caleb Bowen said. "She's an amazing leader and it's going to be exciting to see what she does next."
