HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (13-31) dropped its home midweek contest by the narrow score of 2-1 Wednesday night to the EKU Colonels (14-31) at Jack Cook Field.
Â
"It starts on the mound, and we pitched the ball much better. We only gave them on free base," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the contest. "We forced them to earn what they got. It only ends up with only two (runs). Yesterday was a completely different ballgame in that category."
Â
Chad Heiner started on the bump going 5.0 innings with five strikeouts allowing just two runs on five hits and a walk.
Â
In relief, Peyton Schofield threw a scoreless sixth with three strikeouts. Griffin Miller followed with a pair of perfect innings in the seventh and eighth.
Â
Alex McKay threw the final inning allowing just one hit and striking out a pair of Colonels in the ninth.
Â
At the plate, Cam Harthan went 3-for-5 with three singles for his 13th multi-hit game, including his team-best fourth three-hit game.
Â
Owen Ayers recorded his 21st double of the season in the top of the first. Ayers drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth and scored on a Tre Hondras sacrifice fly later in the inning.
