John Purvis Breaks 43-Year School Record in Men’s Shot Put

Herd scores three on second day of SBC Outdoor Championships
MONROE, La.- Marshall junior John Purvis broke the school record in Men's Shot Put Friday at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships
The Winslow, New Jersey native made a throw of 17.54 meters to shatter the MU record set by Rudy Cebula in 1980 (17.04 meters). Purvis, who joined the Herd this season as a transfer from Morgan State University, finished 5th in the event to score four points for the Herd.
Purvis was one of three athletes to score on the second day of the SBC Championships for Coach Keith Roberts' team. Abby Herring finished 2nd in the Women's 10K to open the day in an event delayed from Thursday due to severe weather. Freshman Taylor Spencer would close the day with a 4th place finish in the Women's 3K Steeplechase in her second-career appearance in the event.
In addition to Purvis, the Herd's Tyra Thomas tied the school record in the Women's 100 meter hurdles. Thomas raced a 13.39 to easily qualify for Saturday's finals in the event. Thomas holds the record for the indoor equivalent 60 meter hurdles event.
The Championships close Saturday with finals starting at 1 p.m. EST in the field events and 5 p.m. EST on the track.
