Marshall falls to Coastal Carolina
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (18-37, 9-21 Sun Belt) fell 9-5 on Senior Day to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (33-21, 16-14 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon in the team's 2024 season finale at Jack Cook Field.
The Herd honored 17 seniors, Tre Hondras, Jack Firestone, Kebler Peralta, Gabriel Cabrera, Chad Heiner, Cole Agemy, Peyton Schofield, Drew Harlow, Caden Kaiser, Nick Jodway, Gio Ferraro, Jay Kehoe, Alex McKay, Carter Lyles, Calin Smith, Lenny Washington and Owen Ayers, in a pregame ceremony.
"It's Senior Day and it's always a special day with your senior," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said about closing the season on Senior Day. "These guys committed to come here to Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia, and this program. We certainly wanted to win the ballgame, but we wanted to make sure we honored that group of seniors as best we could."
In his final game in the Green and White, Ferraro went 2-for-4 for his 12th multi-hit game of the season. Ayers also hit a homer in his final game in Huntington in the third, his eighth of the season and 15th of his career.
"Just that realization it's the last time I get to play with these guys on this field," Ayers said about getting a standing ovation after drawing a walk and being pulled for a pinch runner in the eighth. "It meant a lot and I'm really thankful I got to be a part of this."
Griffin Miller started on the bump hurling 5.0-plus innings giving up four runs on two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Out of the bullpen, Nicholas Weyrich struck out three across a pair of scoreless frames as Jodway, Schofield, Heiner and Washington all made their last collegiate appearances.
Cam Harthan led off with a single as a Ferraro base knock moved him to third with one out in the first. Harthan then scored the first run of the ballgame on a wild pitch.
After Smith doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth, Hondras brought him home with a single to left.
Marshall's final two runs came in the ninth as a Cabrera groundout scored Jake Sparks and Elijah Vogelsong scored on a wild pitch.
Coastal Carolina's three runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings proved to be the difference.
