Herd Comes up Short in Series Opener at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State made the most of two runs in the 3rd and three in the 4th in a 5-1 decision Thursday evening.
The Herd (24-25) had no shortage of opportunities against the Sun Belt Conference's top pitching staff ERA-wise, getting a runner on base via a hit in all but one inning.
Marshall's best chance came in the 5th, getting bases loaded against the Bobcats' (39-13) ace and the league's top pitcher from an ERA perspective in the 5th, but a strikeout ended the frame.
MU scored its run an inning earlier on the speed of Kasia Parks, who forced an errant fielding attempt from Texas State's 2nd baseman.
Marshall pitchers Bub Feringa and Savannah Rice combined to strike out four over six innings of work.
Feringa held TXST without an earned run over the first 2.2 of the game. She struck out consecutive hitters to end the 1st with a runner on 3rd.
Rice replaced Feringa to retire the final out of the 3rd, and after the Bobcats scored three runs with two outs in the 4th, she would keep the hosts silent in the final two innings.
