Marshall Tennis Grinds Out 4-3 Win at Youngstown State

Mokrynskaya fought off five match points to win contest for The Herd

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Tennis team (2-0) finished off a perfect opening weekend with a 4-3 win at Youngstown State (0-1) on Saturday afternoon.

"It was nice to get two wins this weekend, but we can and will do better," Herd Tennis Head Coach John Mercer said after the win.

With the match tied 3-3, Alina Mokrynskaya saw herself down a set and trailing 2-0 in the second to Yeseniia Ovcharova. The freshman fought back to force a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, the Ukrainian fought off five match points and took the second to force a deciding third set. Mokrynskaya cruised to win the first four games and sealed the match for The Herd with a 6-2 third-set victory.

"I'm proud of Alina. It was a tough position to be in for her second career match, but she showed she's a great fighter," Mercer said about Mokrynskaya's performance.

Marshall struck early in doubles. The duo of Johanna Strom and Emma Vanderheyden picked up a 6-2 win on court one with Mokrynskaya teaming up with Sophia Hurrion for a 6-4 victory on court two to seal the doubles point.

Along with Mokrynskaya, MU had Strom win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, win on court two and a 6-2, 6-2, triumph on court four by Hurrion.
