Herd opens Spring 2025 home slate strong as four players finish 2-0 on the evening

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – Marshall Tennis got the home portion of its Spring 2025 season off to a strong start with a resounding 6-1 win over Eastern Kentucky on Friday afternoon at the 7827 Tennis Center in Barboursville.

With the win, Marshall moves to 3-0 on the season.

"It's great to play a home match," Marshall Tennis coach John Mercer said. "It was great to have so many people come out to watch and support our student-athletes. I thought we played better than we played last weekend so it was good to see the jump between week one and week two."

The afternoon started strong as the Herd quickly took the doubles point with Johanna Strom and Nel Van Hout earning a 6-0 win over EKU's Sasha Pakrhomenko at No. 3 doubles and Emma Vanderheyden and Alina Mokrynskaya clinching the point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles over EKU's Masha Fedenko and Anastas Cherniakova.

Mokrynskaya gave the Herd its first singles point of the match, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win over EKU's Ceylin Ipek at No. 3 singles.

Almost simultaneously, the No. 4 singles match wrapped up with Sophia Hurrion's convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over EKU's Marilou Cote to put the Herd up 3-0.

Vanderheyden joined Mokrynskaya at 2-0 on the day after finishing the second set with momentum in her match at No. 2 singles to earn a 6-3, 6-3 win over Parkhomenko, which clinched the match for the Herd.

Strom followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Fedenko and Van Hout rounded out the Herd's victories on the day with a 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles as both also moved to 2-0 on the day.

Marshall returns to action with another home match at the 7827 Tennis Center at 10 a.m. on Sunday when the team hosts Bellarmine.
