Marshall Drops Road Decision to Defending Champions JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Marshall (6-4-1, 2-2-1 Sun Belt) fell 4-1 on the road to defending Sun Belt Conference champions James Madison on Thursday night before a crowd of at Sentara Park. The Dukes struck twice in the opening 12 minutes and never trailed as the Herd's late fight back came up short.
James Madison set the tone early, capitalizing on their first spell of possession in the ninth minute as Aleigha Arndt finished from the top left of goal off a right-footed strike. The hosts doubled their advantage just three minutes later from Jeanette Fieldsend.
The Herd regrouped and generated pressure after halftime, but JMU extended the lead to 3-0 in the 63rd minute. Marshall's attack found a breakthrough in the 78th minute when Bailey Fisher slotted home her team-leading sixth goal of the season, set up by a delivery from Fernanda Dantas, notching her SBC-leading eighth assist of the season.
JMU answered late, with Brooke Potter scoring in the 88th minute to seal the 4-1 result. The Dukes outshot Marshall 15-13 and had a 7-6 edge in shots on target. Emma Durand made three saves for the Herd, while Fisher led Marshall with four shots, two on goal, and played all 90 minutes.
With the loss, Marshall drops to 6-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Sun Belt, while James Madison improves to 5-3-4 and 2-1-2 in league play.

Marshall returns home to face Old Dominion on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Hoops Family Field.
