Herd Volleyball Falls in Weekend Opener at Southern Miss

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (15-13, 7-8 SBC) dropped a close 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23) decision at Southern Miss on Thursday evening in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Beatrice Ciccarelli delivered a standout performance for the Herd, finishing with 14 kills on .500 hitting, adding two blocks and one service ace for a team-best 16.5 points. Emma Barnett matched her with 13 kills and six digs, keeping Marshall in contention during the final sets. Marae Reilly contributed a well-rounded effort at the net with 10 kills on .364 hitting and four blocks. The Herd also saw key contributions from Audrey Geer, who anchored the defense with nine digs and an ace, and Logan Henderson, who chipped in six kills and five digs.

Marshall set the tone early, controlling the first set with a decisive 25-18 win behind efficient attacking with a .300 hitting percentage.

The second set proved to be tightly contested, featuring 14 ties and multiple lead changes before Southern Miss closed on a 3-0 run to take the frame 25-22.

In the third, Marshall rallied to close within a point at 21-20, but the Golden Eagles pulled away for a 25-20 decision. The fourth set mirrored the intensity of the previous frames, as the Herd evened the score at 23-23 following a late kill by Barnett. Southern Miss responded with back-to-back points to secure the match.

Marshall's front line was highlighted by high offensive efficiency from Ciccarelli and Reilly, who combined for 24 kills and a .437 hitting percentage.
