CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Marshall University Men's Basketball Team (3-1) dropped its first game of the season, falling 104-76 to NR/RV Virginia (4-0) at John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday afternoon.
"I mean, they took us to the woodshed. You know they're a good team; we knew that coming in," Herd Men's Basketball Head Coach Cornelius 'Corny' Jackson said after the game. "They have a lot of weapons. They execute. They're disciplined. Obviously we didn't shoot the ball great, but they caused a lot of that. So good learning lesson for this group. It's a long season, so I believe games like this will help prepare us for Sun Belt play."
Landen Joseph led the Herd with a breakout 22-point performance on 8-for-11 shooting, including 3-for-4 from three-point range.
Matt Van Komen finished with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double. Noah Otshudi added 10 points and a team-best four assists, while Wilson Dubinsky provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, hitting 2-of-3 from deep and all four free-throw attempts.
Virginia shot 52 percent overall and 43 percent from long range, converting 12 three-pointers and turning 15 Herd turnovers into 25 points.
After trailing 61-33 at halftime, the Herd showed resilience by playing Virginia even in the second stanza, each team scoring 43.
