TROY, Ala. – The Marshall University Baseball team (12-14, 2-5 SBC) dropped a narrow 4-3 series opener in Troy, Alabama, to the No. 17 Troy Trojans (20-7, 5-2 SBC) on Friday.

"We got great pitching today - Bryce (Blevins) competed extremely well and gave us a chance to win," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "(Blaine) Albright and (Peyton) Jackson both put up zeros to keep it tight. Offensively, we missed our pitch too many times and missed a couple situational opportunities. They are a good team, and we are right there. We will be ready to get after them again tomorrow."

Bryce Blevins started on the bump for The Herd allowing four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks with five strikeouts. Blaine Albright and Peyton Jackson came on the bullpen to throw perfect eighth and ninth innings, respectively, with a pair of strikeouts each.

Jackson Halter recorded his eighth two-hit game of the season with Elijah Vogelsong collecting his second with a pair of singles.

AJ Havrilla, Tyler Kamerer and Cam Harthan each had an RBI.

For the second time this season, MU successfully executed a safety squeeze as Harthan brought home Ethan Murdoch, who led of the fourth with a double, on the sacrifice bunt cut the deficit to 2-1.

Then in the eighth, Halter led off with a single. The right fielder then took second on a wild pitch and third on a steal, all with no outs. He was then brought home a Havrilla sacrifice fly to cut Troy's advantage to 4-2.

Vogelsong then had a two-out single, stole second and was brought home on a two-out RBI single by Kamerer to make it a 4-3 game.

The Trojans held off the comeback as Colby Frieda struck out the side in the ninth.

Troy tallied two runs in the second and sixth innings.
