MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 4 Seed Marshall University Baseball team (32-25) suffered a 4-2 loss to No. 1 Seed Coastal Carolina (46-11) in the winner's bracket on Thursday night in the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Championship presented by Troy University in Montgomery, Alabama.
Â
"Tough loss in the winner's bracket with a chance to put yourself in a great position in a tournament with a win tonight," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "I think bottom line is we gave them too many freebies early in the game against a really good team like they are."
Â
MU had everyone in the starting lineup register a hit with Elijah Vogelsong collecting a double in the second.
Â
The Chanticleers got on the board early with a run in the first and three in the second to take a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Herd tallied a pair of two-out runs in the eighth with AJ Havrilla driving in Jackson Halter and Eddie Leon bringing in Maika Niu with a single to cut the lead in half at 4-2. CCU held off MU's comeback.
Â
In relief Peyton Jackson, threw 3.0 shutout innings allowing just three hits and striking out two as Luke Proehl hurled a shutout eighth with a pair of punch outs.
