HAMPTON, Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (25-24, 10-14 SBC) fell in the series finale 8-2 on Sunday to the Old Dominion Monarchs (17-26, 12-12 SBC) in Hampton, Virginia.
We ran into a very strong pitching performance today from ODU's starter Blake Morgan," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "We got to him early but he settled in obviously. Once again today, our free bases haunted us. Winning series on the road in this conference is tough. We need to toughen up and finish strong here these last two weeks of regular season."
With a single and a double, Jackson Halter recorded his 14th multi-hit game of the season.
After a leadoff walk to Halter to begin the contest, Maika Niu hit his third homer of the series to give The Herd a 2-0 lead.
The Monarchs, however, tallied eight unanswered runs with one in the second, two in the third, two in the seventh and three in the eighth.
After giving up the opening two, ODU starting pitcher Blake Morgan finished with a complete game allowing six hits and a walk the rest if the way with seven strikeouts.
Out of the bullpen, Fenix DiGiacomo threw 3.0 hitless frames with a pair of strikeouts as Tim Baird struck out three in 1.1 innings.
