Women’s Soccer Returns to Huntington for Home Opener Wednesday

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Following a season-opening win last week on the road, Marshall women's soccer (1-0) faces Glenville State in its home opener from Hoops Family Field Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.

COACH RAFA SIMOES
- Head Coach Rafa Simoes is in year two leading Marshall's women's soccer program. The former associate with the Herd men's team is a 2018 graduate of the University of Charleston in West Virginia, where he played for then-head coach Chris Grassie.
- Simoes coached 19 newcomers in his first season leading Marshall's women's soccer team. He earned his first win as a head coach on Sept. 1, 2024 in a 1-0 victory over Belmont.
PRE-MATCH NOTES
- Coach Simoes and the Herd could not have asked for a better start in its 3-0 victory at Morehead State Thursday. The road win was the first since the 2023 season for the Herd. Now MU returns home where it went 3-3-2 last season Huntington.
- The Herd returns 15 veterans while adding 12 newcomers to this season's roster. Two of the newcomers - Marcella Alves and Tiggi Gent - scored in the season opener.
- Senior Bailey Fisher scored the opening goal after drawing a penalty in the box against the Eagles. The Hurricane native is climbing the Marshall recordbook with six game-winning goals, tied for fourth all-time.
ABOUT THE PIONEERS
- Glenville State is coming off a 7-9-2 season, setting a school record for wins in a season.
- Head Coach J.R. Dodson is entering his fifth season as a head coach. The Pioneers are entering just its eighth season as a program.
- Wednesday will be the first regular season meeting between the two sides.
