STATESBORO, Ga. – Marshall (4-2-1) battled to a 1-1 draw at Georgia Southern (2-5-2) on Sunday to open Sun Belt Conference play.
"Credit to Georgia Southern for an amazing game, really tough team to play at home in Statesboro," Head Coach Rafa Simoes said. "I thought we trained well and the first 25 minutes we did a really good job. I feel we also closed strong and it was good to get a road point and we now focus on ULM."
The Herd seized the early advantage in the 13th minute when Fernanda Dantas delivered a pinpoint free kick into the box and Marcella Alves rose to head home her first goal of the season. Georgia Southern responded in the 27th minute as Kendall Wilson's free kick deflected off a Marshall defender and found the net to level the match at 1-1.
Georgia Southern applied sustained pressure throughout the second half, outshooting Marshall 14-5 over the final 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Alexis Wolgemuth delivered five saves—including a crucial late stop to preserve the draw in the 84th minute. Angel Fowler recorded a late shot on target but could not break the deadlock for the Herd.
The match was physical, with both teams combining for 22 fouls and four yellow cards. Georgia Southern finished with a 20-11 edge in total shots and a 6-2 margin in corners, but Marshall's defense stood tall to earn the road point.
Marshall's defensive unit allowed only one goal despite facing relentless attacks and remained disciplined in the closing stages. The Herd was called offside three times and made several substitutions to manage second-half fatigue.
