Herd’s Evan Bottone homers, Havrilla goes 3-for-4 in Salute the Troops contest at Founders Park
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Marshall Baseball dropped an 8-1 contest to Navy on Sunday at Founders Park in Columbia, S.C.
The neutral site non-conference contest was part of the annual Salute The Troops Tournament, hosted by the University of South Carolina.
"Navy played a really good baseball game today," Marshall Baseball coach Greg Beals said. "They played clean, they hit the ball and they were able to take care of baserunners and take advantage of all the opportunities they got. As far as where we go, we just stick to our guns. There's nothing to change – if that "
Evan Bottone continued his strong weekend at the plate, lifting a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning to get the Herd on the scoreboard.
Bottone homered for the second straight day and now has three home runs and eight RBIs on the year. He has at least one hit and has reached base twice in all five games in which he's appeared this season.
In that sixth inning, A.J. Havrilla followed Bottone's home run with a double and Jackson Halter walked to give the Herd runners on first and second with no outs in a 4-1 game.Â
However, luck wasn't on the Herd's side as Tyler Kamerer's sharp line drive to the right side was snagged by Navy first baseman Victor Izquierdo, who doubled off Halter at first to thwart the rally.
Beals said the Herd is doing the right things and that good things will happen if they continue on that path.Â
"We hit a line drive to the first baseman and get doubled off, so there were a couple unfortunate plays for us," Beals said. "When you are in a little bit of a funk, that's what happens. There's nothing to change and that was the message I told our guys. We've just got to stick to our guns and continue to fight and play tougher and we'll get this thing turned around."
Havrilla finished 3-for-4 with a double for the Herd while Oliver Service added a triple to center field in the loss.
Marshall starter Kenyon Collins went six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out six.Â
Marshall wraps up its travels of the Palmetto State on Monday afternoon with a contest at Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. The tentative start time for that game is 4 p.m. from Winthrop Ballpark.
