HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (8-6) picked up a series sweep over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies with a 25-2, seven-inning win on Sunday at Jack Cook Field.
Series sweep is always good to have and keep the momentum, Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. We have a tough mid-week series going to Louisville this week and starting conference play. It's nice to be moving into a really good direction right now from a team standpoint.
The Herd saw Tyler Kamerer, Jackson Halter and Oliver Service all deliver multi-hit and multi-RBI contests with Service leading the way with six runs driven in.
On the bump, Kenyon Collins earned his second win of the season going 6.0 innings of one run baseball, with the run being unearned, on three hits and four walks to go alongside seven strikeouts.
After the Bonnies scored the opening run in the first inning, Marshall launched an offensive barrage at the plate. A Halter double scored Evan Bottone and Kamerer as a Cooper Hinson double chased home Halter. Service then doubled down the left-field line to score AJ Havrilla and Hinson to make it 5-1 after the first.
The momentum continued into the second with a Havrilla single scoring Bottone followed by a base-loaded walk to Hinson scoring Kamerer. Service then launched a double to right center, clearing the bases of Havrilla, Hinson and Halter to make it 10-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kamerer singled home Jackson Golden and Jack Smith, Halter doubled home Kamerer and Bottone, a Hinson sacrifice fly plated Halter and a two-out double from Cleary Simpson scored Havrilla for a six-run frame, extending the lead to 16-1.
The MU offense closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth with nine runs on three hits, with one of the hits being a leadoff homer by Ty Householder to right, the freshman's first collegiate long ball.
