Marshall Baseball Falls in Game Two to ODU, 4-1

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (15-18, 7-7 SBC) suffered a 4-1 defeat in game two against the Old Dominion Monarchs (16-18, 5-9 SBC) on Saturday at Jack Cook Field.

"It's a tough loss," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "We have one bad inning on the defensive side that we gave up three runs on one hit. We gave them freebies, walks, hit batsmen, an error, that set them up and gave them more opportunities than we should have given them."

Drew Harlow struck out seven in 6.1 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and four walks. Out of the bullpen, Landen Doll registered a pair of punch outs in 1.2 scoreless innings on the bump.

Cleary Simpson recorded three walks with Evan Bottone picking up a RBI and a double in the contest. Cooper Hinson registered his 12th double of the season.

ODU captured the lead in the top of the fourth as it tallied three runs on one hit and an error to take a 3-0 lead.

Marshall struck for its run in the bottom of the fifth as Simpson drew a lead off walk and stole second. Jack Smith then singled to put runners at the corners with a Bottone ground out scoring Simpson.

The Monarchs added an insurance run in the top of the eighth.

The Herd is set for a rubber match against the Monarchs on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jack Cook Field.
