Krebs 4.0 scoreless innings of relief, two-RBI game for Havrilla

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (16-18, 8-7 SBC) clinched its weekend series over Old Dominion Monarchs (16-19, 5-10 SBC) on Sunday at Jack Cook Field with a 7-5 win.
Â
"That's the story. It's great to get a series win. It wasn't the best of baseball there, especially early in the ballgame, but we cleaned up. Charlie Krebs was the big piece for us coming out of the bullpen, settling the ballgame down for us and we played really clean from that point on."
Â
Reliever Charlie Krebs gave MU 4.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen allowing just two hits and two walks with three strikeouts for his first win of the season. Davis Gunn earned the first save of his collegiate career with a perfect ninth on just six pitches.
Â
Evan Bottone and Cleary Simpson each registered three hits in the contest with AJ Havrilla drove in a pair of runs on two hits, with a double on his stat line.
Â
Starting pitcher Kenyon Collins stranded a pair in scoring position in the first with an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Then the Herd offense started strong. Bottone led off with a single as Tyler Kamerer drew a walk. A Cooper Hinson sacrifice bunt placed the pair in scoring position with one out.
Â
Havrilla, who forced a full count, singled up the middle to bring them both home and reached second on an error, making it 2-0. Jackson Halter followed by smoking a 1-1 offering down the left-field line to score Havrilla and make it 3-0.
Â
The Monarchs answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second and three in the fourth to put MU at a 5-3 deficit.
Â
However, the Herd opened the bottom of the fourth with singles by Jack Smith, Bottone and Kamerer, with Kamerer's scoring Smith and cutting the deficit to 5-4.
Â
Marshall regained the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the fifth with a Jackson Golden double scoring Oliver Service and a Bottone fielder's choice plating Golden.
Â
MU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with Simpson bringing home Havrilla on his third hit of the game.
