Halter five hits, McAninch earns first win
Â
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Marshall University Baseball team (17-18) rallied from a 6-2 deficit for an 11-7 win in Columbus, Ohio, over Ohio State on Wednesday night.
Â
"It was a full team win," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "You saw we used a lot of the pitching staff. We wanted to get guys work for the weekend, but not too much work. I used Davis Gunn maybe a tad more, but we're in a situation to win the ball game, and it protected Charlie Krebs a little bit. Just a good win."
Â
At the plate, Jackson Halter went 5-for-6 with a double as Jack Smith registered a pair of hits and two RBI. Oliver Service also had a two-RBI game.
Â
A.J. McAninch earned his first collegiate win with three strikeouts across 1.1 innings allowing just one hit. Davis Gunn earned his second save of the season with 2.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits and striking out one. Alex Caudill also hurled a scoreless second inning.
Â
Trailing 6-5, Albright exited with bases loaded after a strikeout in the bottom of the sixth to make way for McAninch. The right-hander stranded the bases full of Buckeyes by striking out Dane Harvey looking to keep the score 6-5. McAninch followed that with a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless seventh to keep it 6-5.
Â
With one out in the top of the eighth, Halter picked up his fourth hit of the game on a single to right. Service then smoked a single to left with an error by the left fielder allowing Halter to score and tie the game 6-6.
Â
A walk to Cleary Simpson and Jackson Golden getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases with one out for Jack Smith. Down 0-2 in the count, Smith hit a single down the right-field line to plate Service and Simpson to give MU an 8-6 lead, the team's first since the fourth at 2-1. Evan Bottone added another run with Golden scoring on a sacrifice fly to make 9-6.
Â
OSU added a run in the eighth, but Marshall answered with Cam Harthan scoring on a Halter double, his fifth hit of the game, and AJ Havrilla scoring on a Service sacrifice fly to make it 11-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Â
On the second pitch in the bottom of the ninth, Ohio State's Jacob Parr hit a flyball that was going over the wall, but Harthan robbed the potential home run. Gunn then ended the game by inducing a 6-4-3 double play for the win.
Â
"I'm just doing everything, I've been doing my whole life, five years old playing baseball. Just going out there, having fun and taking advantage of my opportunities," Harthan said about making the catch.
Â
The Herd jumped on top early with RBI singles from AJ Havrilla and Halter to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
Â
The Buckeyes answered with six unanswered runs with one in the bottom of the first and five in the bottom of the fourth as MU trailed 6-2.
Â
Marshall took advantage of a pair of Ohio State errors as Havrilla scored to cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the fifth.
Â
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth from Albright, the Herd cut further into the OSU advantage in the top of the sixth with a Cooper Hinson double scoring Evan Bottone and Service reaching on a fielder's choice to plate Hinson to make it 6-5 before the rally in the eighth..
