HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall baseball team (19-21, 6-12 C-USA) meets up with Eastern Kentucky (21-19, 10-7 Ohio Valley) for the second time in a week, as the teams battle at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Turkey Hughes Field in Richmond, Ky. EKU will provide live statistics of the game at www.ekusports.com.
The teams also met last Wednesday in Huntington, with the Thundering Herd notching a 6-3 victory. Jimmy Stanley (Fr., Lexington, Ky.) made his first career start a good one, holding the Colonels to just a run and three hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four. Bryson Meyers (Sr., Oakland, Md.) got the final out to record his first save of the season. Nick Barte (1-5) started for Eastern Kentucky and took the defeat after giving up six earned runs, 10 hits and two walks in three innings.
Adam Ptacek (Sr., Assaria, Kan.) led the Marshall offense with hits in all three of his at bats and two RBI. Adam Frederick (Sr., Franklin, Pa.) added two doubles for the Thundering Herd. Marshall scored five runs in the first inning, then coasted to the win behind the stellar pitching of Stanley.
Eastern Kentucky took two of three over the weekend at home against first-place Samford. Charlie Yarbrough leads the Colonels with a .376 batting average, 15 home runs and 52 RBI. EKU is hitting .305 as a team. On the mound, EKU has a team ERA of 5.08 and is led by Chris Friedrich, who is 7-1 with a 2.25 ERA. EKU is coached by Elvis Dominguez, who is 120-136 in his five years with the Colonels.
Eastern Kentucky leads the all-time series with Marshall, 29-21. The teams each won on their home fields last year, with EKU pulling out an 11-10 win in Richmond, Ky., and Marshall returning the favor, 5-4, at University Heights.
Marshall lost two of three games over the weekend to Southern Miss. The Herd won the opener, 6-2, before the Golden Eagles notched 19-4 and 5-0 wins to take the series. In the opener, Jeremy Slone (Jr., Paintsville, Ky.), Andrew Blain (Fr., Huntington, W.Va.) and Brian Knippelmeyer (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) combined to hold the Eagles to three runs and nine hits while Chris Monaco had three hits for the Thundering Herd offense. Southern Miss dominated the Saturday game as Toddric Johnson hit two homers and drove in five. In the finale, USM's Cliff Rossum dominated, firing a complete-game one-hitter to shut down the Herd.
After the EKU contest, Marshall heads to the Bayou for the weekend, traveling to Tulane for a three-game series. The teams play at 7:30 p.m. ET Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Zephyr Field in New Orleans.
