GREENVILLE, N.C. - Marshall volleyball continued to showcase its authority on the court by knocking off Coastal Carolina 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-18) in the second match of the Pirate Invitational in Greenville, N.C.
The Herd improved to 10-4 with the victory and kept a seven-match win streak intact. The Chanticleers dropped to 1-6 with the loss.
"Defensively we were really good tonight," said head coach Mitch Jacobs. "So was our serve and pass game. It took us a couple sets to get our offense going, but once Sammie (Bane) started to push the tempo it seemed like our team became more excited to play."
Bane finished with 38 assists and one was dig shy of a double-double, earning nine.
The Herd was led by outside hitters Laura Der and Katy Schad on offense. Both hitters finished with 13 kills and each earned a double-double. Der earned her fifth double-double after finishing with 11 digs, while Schad earned her seventh double-double after leading the team in digs with 20.
Libero Dorothy Rahal followed on defense with 15 digs, while Sacha Byous-McConnell led the team in blocks for the second match in a row with four.
As a whole, the Thundering Herd kept the Chanticleers to the lowest hitting percentage of the season at 0.00. Marshall only allowed Coastal Carolina 20 kills and forced them to commit 20 attack errors.
The Herd offense doubled Coastal Carolina's kill count with 41.
Marshall is 18-1 in sets for its past six matches and is looking for its third tournament championship title after winning its own Thunder Invite as well as the Kent State Mizuno Tournament.
"We need to stay focused and do our best to finish this tournament strong," said Jacobs on the prospect of winning three tournaments this season.
The Herd will finish the tournament with a match against UMBC tomorrow at 4 p.m. Stay tuned to HerdZone.com for recaps and stats.
