HOUSTON - Vanessa Jules won the high jump on Sunday to help the Marshall track and field team to a best-ever fifth place finish at the Conference USA Track and Field Championships at Rice University-Holloway Field.
"It was an unbelievable performance by my team and my coaching staff this weekend," said head coach Jeff Small. "I have never been prouder of a team or staff in my career."
The Thundering Herd's place and point total of 63 easily surpasses its previous C-USA finish of 11th and scoring 35 more points than it ever had before (28).
Jules, who placed first in the heptathlon on Friday, won the title with a jump of 1.78 meters (5 feet-10 inches). The senior also placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles with a school-record time of 13.67. Jules won the Performance of the Meet, given to the student-athlete with the best overall performance.
"I was shocked," Jules said of her award. "I didn't know I was going to have a record-breaking day in the heptathlon. I pulled it out because I really really wanted it. It was my senior year and I really wanted to go out with a bang."
Marshall received another great senior performance from Crystal Walker as she won the triple jump (12.71m/41-08.50). It was her first time competing in the event this season as she bested teammate and school record holder Jasia Richardson who placed second (12.58m/41-03.25).
"The vibe was different," Jules said whose heptathlon performance was good enough to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. "Everyone had smiles on their faces, no one was down. The atmosphere was great. We went in with a lot of confidence."
Both relay teams had school-record breaking performances. The 4x100 meter relay team of Shanice Johnson, Walker, Elaine Derricott and Kearra Haynes placed sixth with a time of 45.35. The 4x400 meter relay team of Amber Pierson, Haynes, Loren Dyer and Johnson finished third with a time of 3:37.58.
Senior Amanda Kennedy earned all-conference honors, given to the top three in each event, in the javelin with her third place finish and a throw of 45.91 meters (150-07).
UCF won the meet with 167 points followed by SMU (99.50) and Houston (81).
Marshall will travel many to the NCAA First Round, formerly known as the NCAA Regionals, held in Greensboro, N.C. May 23-25 with the hopes of advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Oregon.
