SOUTH BEND, Ind.-The Marshall University cross country teams improved from their previous meet to place well in a loaded field Friday afternoon at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.

The men's team had five members who ran faster times on Friday than at its previous meet, the Commodore Classic. Friday's meet also was a longer distance (5-miles) than the Commodore Classic (8K) was two weeks ago for the men's team.

The women's team had six members improve times compared to the Commodore Classic. Adriana Cook and Samantha Graffius did so by over a minute.

Junior Daniel Green led the Herd men at Notre Dame for the second consecutive year with an impressive 16th place finish out of 162 runners and time of 25:10.3. His new five-mile personal record cut nearly 17 seconds off of his time from last year (25:27.1) in South Bend.

As a team, the Herd men finished 14th out of 20 schools in the gold division race with a point total of 343. Mid-Atlantic Regional opposition Temple won the race with a point total of 76. The team did place higher than Conference USA foe UTSA, who finished 16th with a point total of 446.

Green was followed by sophomore Alex Minor who finished in 49th with a time of 25:52.2 and junior Nick Schmidt in 80th (26:18.9). Sophomore Hunter Deem and freshman Austin Jordan finished in 123rd and 124th, respectively. Deem ran in 27:22.1 and Jordan ran in 27:25.2. Freshman Joel Krznaric finished in 153rd with a time of 29:13.0.

The women finished 23rd out of 25 schools. For the second consecutive week, junior Adriana Cook led the Marshall women. She finished in 83rd and ran a time of 18:44.5.

Junior Taylor Craigo and senior Barkley Castro finished back to back in 134rd and 135th. Craigo just edged out her teammate, running in 19:18.9. Castro came through the line in 19:19.0.

Sophomore Abigail Short finished in 146th with a time of 19:31.5. Senior Jane Jensen followed in 175th with a time of 20:05.8. Fellow senior Samantha Graffius finished in 183rd with a time of 20:17.8, followed by sophomore Mary Kerby in 191st (20:58.2).

COACH'S CORNER

Assistant Coach Caleb Bowen on the meet

"We did a lot better than last meet. We went out more aggressively and were more competitive, and I'll always take that. The men's top three looked great, Daniel [Green] ran awesome. A top-20 finish at Notre Dame shows that he is ready for the next level at conferences and regionals. I'm really excited for both sides to keep moving forward and I'm looking forward to High Point."

Bowen on Austin Jordan and Hunter Deem

"I'm really proud of Austin Jordan. He has a lot more in him, but today was a major improvement for him. His drastic improvement from last meet to this one was tremendous. I think with time and experience, he will move closer to the top three, as will Hunter [Deem]."

Bowen on the women's team

"I thought Taylor [Craigo] and Barkley [Castro] running close together really helped. Abigail [Short], once again, came in strong for us. I think for the girls we still need to work on the second mile in training. At the conference meet I hope we piece it all together."
