Marshall ties single-game program record with 19 made three-pointers
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – After trailing for just over the first 10 minutes of the opening half, Marshall men's basketball turned on the jets and blew past Mount St. Mary's, 98-75, Wednesday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall had 19 makes from beyond the arc to tie a single-game program record and set the program record with 45 three-point attempts taking down the previous record of 41, which was done twice and last happened against WKU on Jan. 21, 2017.
The Herd moved to 3-0 on the season with the Mountaineers falling to 0-3.
"If you're a basketball fan, you know Mount St. Mary's is a good name in basketball. They always have and always will be," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "We turned the lights on too bright at the beginning of the ballgame. I told our team they have to understand that we're the big game for these teams. These guys are coming because you are now their big game."
Marshall was led by four with 10 or more points with senior guard Jon Elmore leading the way with 24. Elmore went 8 of 18 from field, 7 of 14 from three-point range, brought down four rebounds and dished out eight assists.
"It was a fun game," Elmore said. "A lot of guys got to play. I thought our focus wasn't great early on, but in the second half I think we really locked in."
Senior guard C.J. Burks collected 16 points on a 6 for 11 shooting night with three three-pointers. Burks also had three steals, a pair of assists and a rebound on his stat line.
Sophomore guard Jarrod West shot 50 percent from the field (5 of 10) while going four of seven from beyond the arc for 14 points. West also had a game-high four takeaways to go with three helpers and three boards.
"I get frustrated when my man scores on me," West said. "I think I did a good job tonight creating some havoc for the team. It was a good win for us."
Sophomore forward Jannson Williams finished the contest with 10 points on a four of seven night from the field. The sophomore shot 50 percent from three-point range and grabbed five rebounds in the contest.
Senior guard Rondale Watson had 10 assists and fell short of a double-double with eight rebounds.
"I think Rondale Watson had a great game," D"Antoni said. "He's really the star of the game. He doesn't have the stats some other people do, but I thought his ability to come in and solidify our lineup and defensively he created a lot of opportunities for us. He had 10 assists, six in the first half."
After trailing for the first 10 minutes of the game, freshman guard Taevion Kinsey threw down a slam on an Elmore assist to give Marshall a 21-20 lead with 9:14 remaining in the first half as the Herd never fell behind again in the game.
Marshall forced 24 Mountaineer turnovers and scored 33 points off those takeaways, while turning the ball over just nine times and giving up only six points off those turnovers.
The Herd went 37 of 73 (50.7 percent) from the field and 19 of 45 (42.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
Mount's Malik Jefferson had 15 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double against the Herd.
