HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—For the fifth time in school history, Marshall track and field won its season-opening meet, the Marshall Opener, Friday night at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Indoor Complex.
Marshall, which has won every Marshall Opener contested, took first place in a tri-meet over Northern Kentucky and Ohio. The Herd led with 118 team points, followed by Ohio with 64 points, and Northern Kentucky with 50.
Thundering Herd athletes won seven of the 12 events contested on Friday.
Sophomore Lauren Zaglifa won the pole vault and shattered her previous indoor pole vault school record mark. Her top clearance of the evening set the new school record at 3.86 meters (12 feet, 8 inches). Her previous indoor personal and school record was 3.60m (11 ft. 9.75 in.).
Freshman Macie Majoy finished second in the event with a top clearance of 3.66m (12 ft.).
Seniors Sarah Bever and Elena Marchand each won their respective field events. Bever took first in the high jump with a top clearance of 1.68m (5 ft. 6 in.) and Marchand won the shot put with a top throw of 14.33m (47 ft. 0.25 in.).
Sophomore Sydnei Taylor won the opening track event of the evening in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.94.
Junior Safiyyah Mitchell started strong in the 60m hurdles with a winning time of 8.66.
Senior Kayla Haywood and sophomore Brandy Elysee alternated the top two spots in the 60m dash and 200m dash. Haywood won the 60m with a time of 7.71 and Elysee won the 200m with a time of 25.20. Her time in the 200m dash was a new meet record.
