Debell leads team with 15 kills
MIAMI, Fla. - The Marshall volleyball team lost in three sets (20-25, 21-25, 22-25) to the FIU Panthers, Sunday afternoon at Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
The Thundering Herd is now 7-9 and 0-2 in Conference USA. The Panthers improve to 9-5 and 2-0 in conference play.
"This is the second match in a row that we were unable to even slow down the other team's top attacker," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "That really hurt us."
Freshman Gabrielle Coulter led the Herd with 31 assists. Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell topped the team with 15 kills. Senior Lauren Mattmuller added six kills and both senior Shelby Conley and junior Ivana Trecheva both chipped in five. Junior Amber Weber led Marshall in digs with 23.
"Most alarming though is the way we have been beaten from 18 on, in the last five 25 point sets," Jacobs said. "That is something that we will get in the gym and work on."
Following a Marshall kill to tie the match at 1 all, FIU went on a 3-0 run to take the lead. The Herd went on a 7-0 run before FIU battled back and took the opening set, 25-20.
The second set was a back-and-forth throughout the set until FIU pulled away at 21-19 to go on a 5-0 run to take the second set, 25-21.
The Herd started the third set with a 2-0 run, before FIU answered and tied the set at 3. Marshall took the lead at 15-14 and went back and forth with FIU but the Panthers took the last three points to clinch the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
"I look for us to make big steps this week as we head into another road trip next weekend," Jacobs said.
Marshall's next contest is on Friday, Sept. 28, in Birmingham against the UAB Blazers. First serve is set for 8 p.m., eastern. The Herd will wrap up road play at Louisiana Tech (Sept. 30). Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Friday, Oct. 5 against WKU.
