Volleyball Set for Road Match at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Marshall volleyball team is back on the road to take on the UAB Blazers in Conference USA action. First serve from the Bartow Arena is set for 8 p.m. eastern.

The Thundering Herd enters the match with a record of 7-9 and 0-2 in C-USA play. The Blazers enter at 8-8 and 0-2 in conference action. Fans can tune in to the match through CUSAtv.

"We have a tough road trip in front of us," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Both teams (UAB and Louisiana Tech) are much improved from a year ago and our kids will need to keep their focus from the start to finish if we are going to have an opportunity to pull either of these matches out.

"If we play as a unit, I believe we can play with these two teams."

Marshall dropped its first two Conference USA matches versus Charlotte (3-2) and at FIU (3-0). Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell leads the Herd in kills by a wide margin with 241. Freshman Joelle Coulter is next with 110 and senior Shelby Conley has 103. Freshman setter Gabrielle Coulter has done an excellent job during her rookie campaign with 533 assists and is averaging 9.87 assists per set. Junior libero Amber Weber leads the Herd with 320 digs.

The Blazers fell in its first two Conference USA matches as well getting swept by FIU and Florida Atlantic this past weekend. UAB is looking to get back on the winning side, having lost its last five matches and getting swept in the last four. The Blazers feature three players all with over 100 kills in Abby Carlile (160), Emma Mitchell (122) and Victoria Young (103). Young also has 16 solo blocks this season and 54 total. Shelby Holderfield leads the team with 561 assists and Emily Martinez is tops with 153 digs.

Following the match in Birmingham, Marshall travels to Ruston, La., to take on Louisiana Tech. The contest is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. eastern.
