RUSTON, La. – The Marshall volleyball team bounced back with a sweep of Louisiana Tech (25-20, 25-17, 25-21), on the road Sunday afternoon.
The Thundering Herd improves to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in Conference USA. Louisiana Tech falls to 6-12 and 1-2 in conference action.
"Our energy was really good today," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We were very good on the serve and pass game as well as on the defensive side of the ball. I felt that we were able to do enough on the block that our floor defense was able to take over and it really showed in sets two and three.
"Gabby (Coulter) distributed the ball very well and late in the match was able to find her middles and that helped us finish the match. I'm very proud of our team that they were able to close it out in three."
Freshman Sarah Schank led the Herd with 10 kills and added 12 digs on defense. Senior Shelby Conley and redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell both recorded nine kills and senior Lauren Mattmuller added seven. Freshman setter Gabrielle Coulter had 28 assists and junior libero Amber Weber added 16 more digs.
"Sarah, Ciara, Shelby and Lolo (Mattmuller) all gave good offensive efforts tonight," coach Jacobs said. "And I thought that Mion (Weldon) was available for Gabby at a couple really big moments of the match. Lolo had what I thought was her best defensive game at the net.
"Amber was her usual self today. Passing great and I thought she took their middle attack away early and when we weren't blocking it."
Marshall jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set. The Lady Techsters fought back and took the lead at 14-13 but the Herd stayed tough and re-took the lead at 18-17. Marshall held on the rest of the way as Conley recorded three kills out of the Herd's final four points to take the first set, 25-20.
The second set started with points being traded back and forth until Marshall took the lead at 8-7. The Herd extended its lead to a high of eight points at 20-12. A kill by Debell finished off the second set, 25-17, as Marshall took a 2-0 lead into the break.
The Lady Techsters had to fight back again at the beginning of set three, trailing 3-0, but then tying the set at 3-3. The score was tied four times and there were four lead changes until Marshall grabbed the lead for good at 10-9 off a kill by Debell. Two more kills by Conley led to the sweep as the Herd finished off the third set, 25-21.
Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center for two more Conference USA matches. First up for the Herd is a match with WKU on Friday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. Marshall will then play UTSA on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.
