Totzke’s Late Goal Completes Women’s Soccer’s Comeback Over Old Dominion

10/3/2019 10:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer

The senior’s double-overtime game-winning goal was her first of the season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Alyssa Totzke played a mere six minutes, but her goal in double overtime capped off a three-goal comeback as Marshall women's soccer (4-8-0, 2-2-0) defeat Old Dominion 3-2 at Hoops Family Field on Thursday night. The Thundering Herd is on a two-game win streak for the first time this season.

Lindsay Langley also played a big role coming in for Courtney McVicker in the 16th minute giving up no goals and making six saves in the final 86:26.

"Down 2-0, it was an incredible comeback," Marshall head coach Kevin Long said after the game. "We told the team after the game that we've been in that situation a few times this season, but this time we saw a different response. They answered the call. I was proud they didn't let those two goals dig a hole for them. They fought, clawed and got those two goals back. Both teams by the end were really fatigued. We didn't have much legs, but you could see the grit come out which is something we want to see as a defining characteristic of us."

MU was on the wrong end of a first minute goal by the Monarchs when Ece Turkoglu sent a through ball to Kyra Ricks, who put it past McVicker.

ODU would go up 2-0 in the 16th minute with a volley by Loes Van Loon to the corner of the goal.

That, however, did not stop the persistent Herd as in the 27th minute Mary Lawman fired a free kick towards the box from just inside the half line, it took a bounce off Rene Ross' head to Marah Abu-Tayeh's feet who put it past the keeper to cut the deficit in half.

After ending the half 2-1, M. Abu-Tayeh came out and started the second half with a bang. Just over six minutes into the second stanza, she scored her second goal of the contest from outside the box to ties the game, marking her second consecutive game with two goals.

Two minutes later, M. Abu-Tayeh came with inches of a hat trick with a shot being saved by the ODU keeper and then a defender blocking another shot. She again had a shot saved against her in the 71st minute and then fired another wide in the 74th minute.

There was no score the rest of the way as the two sides headed to overtime tied 2-2.

In the first period of extra time, MU couldn't get a shot on target as Langley mad a pair of saves to send it to a second extra period.

In the second overtime, only one shot was needed. Alyssa Totzke, who came on as a late sub in the first overtime for Morgan White, found a ball from Ross and buried it home to give Marshall the victory. It was her first goal of the season.

NOTES
M. Abu-Tayeh has a team-leading six goals and has scored five of those six goals in the last two contests.

Ross' two assist game was her second time doing so this season.

Langley has made six or more saves in seven of her 10 appearances this season, including her last five contests.

The Herd is now 1-1 in overtime games this season.
