M. Abu-Tayeh extends point streak to four games
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women's soccer (4-9-0, 2-3-0) gave the Charlotte 49ers everything it could handle offensively in a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
"I told the team after the game this was a tough way to lose in the sense that we had plenty of chances," Marshall head coach Kevin Long said after the loss. "A ball of the post, a ball of the crossbar and two shots saved by their defenders. I thought we had some good creative chances. Sometimes you've been in the game long enough that you experience games where you have a lot of chances, but don't put them in. Next thing you know the other team is scoring on the few chances they get and I thought that's exactly what we had happen today."
The first few minutes saw stagnant offense from both sides as neither team recorded a shot until Charlotte's Julia Grainda scored on a cross from Julia Patrum at the 7:52 mark.
The Thundering Herd then put the pressure on with four shots on goal, one by Rene Ross, one by Marah Abu-Tayeh and two by Farah Abu-Tayeh, all saved by Abby Stapleton except for one that was cleared by a 49er defender.
Marshall entered halftime down 1-0 outshooting Charlotte 5-4 with all five shots going on target.
MU continued the pressure in the second half with shots on goal by Mary Lawman and Morgan White, but both were save.
Then between 66:26-68:18, Tescia Schray fired a shot off the crossbar, White had a shot blocked and Metztli Gonzalez's attempt wide right.
The 49ers then went down the pitch and Ashton McKane scored a goal to put Charlotte up 2-0 at the 68:58 mark.
The Herd took three more shots, including another by White that was saved by a defender, before scoring its first goal of the contest on a cross from M. Abu-Tayeh to F. Abu-Tayeh with 16 seconds left in the match.
NOTES
Marshall outshot Charlotte 14-10, including 9-3 on shots on goal.
M. Abu-Tayeh extended her team lead in points to 15 with the assist today and extended her point streak to four games.
F. Abu-Tayeh is now tied for second on Marshall with three goals.
UP NEXT
