Series History: 15th all-time meeting – Marshall leads 9-5
Last Meeting: November 9, 2018 in Charlotte – The 49ers won in four sets in the regular season finale.
Â
Marshall has been playing very well to begin the year under first year head coach Ari Aganus. The Herd has won its last four matches including starting off conference play with a sweep over Southern Miss and a four-set win over FIU, both at home. Marshall has also been thundering away at the net this season as the team leads Conference USA and ranks third in the nation in blocks per set with 3.00. The Herd is only allowing 1.68 blocks per set.
Â
Along with the high team ranking, sophomore Isa Dostal (1.45 per set) leads the conference and is 12th in the nation in blocks per set. Junior Destiny Leon (1.36) is second in C-USA and 26th in the country in blocks per set. However, it has not been just the work of Dostal and Leon at the net as redshirt junior Ciara Debell is third with 45 total blocks, sophomore Mion Weldon has 27, freshman Megan Taylor is next with 20, senior Ivana Trencheva has 18 and sophomore Gabrielle Coulter adds 11 more.
Â
The Herd is closing in on its 2018 season total of 164.5 with 159 total rejections in just 15 matches in 2019.
Â
Staying on the defensive side, senior libero Amber Weber tallied 22 digs in the last match against FIU that put her over 1,000 in her Marshall career. Weber had already recorded over 1,000 in her career earlier this year against Saint Louis, as she also recorded 126 during her freshman year at South Florida. The senior continues to lead the team on the floor with 232 digs, an average of 4.38 per set.
Â
On offense, Marshall has had a balanced attack led by Debell with 226 kills. Debell is averaging 4.26 per set. Sophomore Sarah Schank is second with 112 kills, already well ahead of her 2018 season total of 81. Leon is third on the team with 90 followed by Weldon with 70, Dostal at 55, Trencheva with 44 and freshman Joelle Coulter with 37. Leon and Dostal both have hitting percentages over .300 for the year.
Â
The Herd continues to use a two setter rotation with G. Coulter and junior Sydney Lostumo. G. Coulter leads with 317 assists and Lostumo has 225. Lostumo leads the Herd with 18 service aces including a season-high five in the sweep over Southern Miss. Schank and G. Coulter are next with 14 service aces each.
Â
Opponent
The Charlotte 49ers started C-USA play getting swept by UTSA and then coming back with a four set win on the road at Middle Tennessee. The match against Marshall will be the conference home-opener for the 49ers. Charlotte hosted a home tournament, Aug. 30-31, and had a home match against Davidson.
Â
On the offensive side, Sydney Rowan leads the team with 229 kills, an average of 3.88 per set. Nalani Lyde is second with 114. Jocelyn Stoner (98) and Molly Shaw (95) are both close to breaking 100 kills for the year. Annika Wetterstrom has been the main setter this season with 498 assists, an average of 8.30 per set. Rowan has been a force when serving with 22 service aces and she has recorded at least one ace in 12 matches. Rowan had a season-best four aces against Butler.
Â
This match could come right down to how which teams can break through the blocks as Charlotte is second in the league with 2.42 per set. Stoner leads the team with 63 total followed by Lana Strejcek (37), Tyra Galloway (36), Lyde (31), Rowan (28), Shaw (21) and Wetterstrom (20) all with 20 or more. Libero Yumi Garcia leads the team in digs with 392 as she is averaging 6.64 per set.
