CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Marshall volleyball team pulled together and earned a hard-fought, four-set win (25-19, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15) on the road against the Charlotte 49ers, Friday night at Halton Arena. Four players for Marshall finished with double-digit kills and senior Amber Weber recorded 30 digs.
The Thundering Herd improves to 12-4 and 3-0 in Conference USA. The 49ers fall to 10-8 and 1-2 in league play.
"Amber Weber has always been the heartbeat of our team and she showed out tonight," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "She's a leader on and off the court and was a huge reason for our success tonight. The fight we showed even when things weren't going our way was impressive. They stayed patient and stuck to the game plan.
"Mion (Weldon) was another intricate piece and I'm so proud to see her improve each and every day. It's a great won on the road, and we're excited to get to WKU on Sunday."
Sophomore Sarah Schank led the way, tying her career-high with 16 kills and finished one away from another career-high with 21 digs. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell was next with 13 kills. Debell recorded her 750th career kill in the first set and is now at 762. Sophomore Mion Weldon had her first career match in double-digits with a career-best 12 kills and added three total blocks. Junior Destiny Leon was the fourth Herd player in double-figures with 10 kills and added four blocks. Sophomore Isa Dostal had six kills while senior Ivana Trencheva and freshman Megan Taylor had two each. Taylor also added three blocks.
The Herd's two setters both tallied over 20 or more assists as sophomore Gabrielle Coulter led with 29 and junior Sydney Lostumo had 20.
Weber's season-high 30 digs was her first 30 dig performance since earning 34 on Oct. 7, 2018. Weber now has 1,162 digs in her career with 1,036 coming in a Herd uniform. Debell had 12 digs and Coulter added 11. Freshman Meagan Camden came off the bench to record five digs and one service ace. Freshman Gracie Brumfield came on in the fourth set and had one assist on a kill by Debell.
The match featured the two best blocking teams in Conference USA, however both squads did an exceptional job of keeping the rally alive off the block attempts. Marshall finished with seven total team blocks and Charlotte had eight.
Charlotte jumped out to the early lead in the first set but Marshall quickly rallied back and took the lead at 4-3 on a combined block by Weldon and Dostal. The Herd held the lead through the remainder of the set as Schank recorded seven of her kills in the first and Weber kept the ball going for Marshall with 11 digs. Schank's seventh kill of the set, and 200th of her career, moved it to set-point and then Coulter fired an ace for the win, 25-19.
The second set belonged to the 49ers. Marshall kept it close, however two 5-0 runs by Charlotte helped build the lead back out for the home team. The match was tied at 1-1.
The third set looked like it was going to go Charlotte's way again as the 49ers built out an early 7-2 lead. However, a 7-1 run by the Herd led to a Charlotte timeout as Marshall now led 9-8. The third was a back-and-forth battle that featured 16 ties and nine lead changes. Through it all, Marshall battled to the end and scored the final three points on a kill and an ace from Schank and then a kill from Debell.
The fourth set started in Charlotte's favor again as the 49ers scored the first two points and then led 3-1. The Herd fought back yet again and the set was tied for the second, and final time, at 5-5. A kill from Schank gave Marshall the 6-5 lead and the Herd never looked back. Holding a two-point lead at 11-9, Marshall rolled off a 10-0 run and were up 21-9 before the 49ers finally scored. Overall, the Herd outscored Charlotte 14-6 to end the set and the match. Dostal had the final point of the night with her sixth kill.
Marshall stays out on the road with a Sunday (Oct. 6) match at WKU. First serve from Bowling Green, Ky., is set for 12 p.m. local time, 1 p.m. eastern.
