Volleyball Heads to (RV) WKU for Conference USA Match

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Marshall volleyball team keeps on traveling with a Conference USA road match at (RV) WKU, Sunday at 1 p.m. eastern.

The Thundering Herd enters the match with a 12-4 overall record and 3-0 in conference play. The Lady Toppers, who are receiving votes in the NCAA/AVCA Poll, are 16-1 and 2-0 in league action. There will not be any live video with the match. Only live stats.

Marshall is coming off a four-set win at Charlotte Friday night. Four different players finished with 10 or more kills in the victory. Senior libero Amber Weber was a stalwart on the floor defensively with 30 digs and several other saves to keep the rally alive after the 49ers blocked an attack. Sophomore Sarah Schank led the team with 16 kills, tying a career-high and was second in digs with 21. Sophomore Mion Weldon set a career-high with 12 kills.

The Herd was third in the NCAA in blocks per set (3.00) entering the weekend. Marshall has already surpassed its team block total from a year ago (164.5) with now 166 and counting. The combination of sophomore Isa Dostal and junior Destiny Leon are one and two, respectively, in C-USA in blocks per set.

On offense redshirt junior Ciara Debell leads the team with 239 kills, an average of 4.19 per set. Schank is second with a career-best 128 and averaging 2.37 per set. With 10 kills at Charlotte, Leon is now the third Herd player with at least 100 kills this season. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter leads with 346 assists and junior Sydney Lostumo has 245 assists and leads the Herd with 20 service aces.

The Lady Toppers come in with a 12-match winning streak after taking down Middle Tennessee in four sets on Friday. The Blue Raiders won the second set which ended a streak of 14-straight sets won. So far the only loss this season for WKU came to No. 24 Louisville in four sets back on Sept. 6.

The Lady Toppers feature three players with over 100 kills this season. Lauren Matthews leads with 230, an average of 3.90 per set. Paige Briggs is next with 189 and she is averaging 3.20 per set. Sophia Cerino is third with 113. Cerino has been an outstanding server as well as she leads the team with 50 aces which also leads C-USA by 21 over the next closest player. Nadia Dieudonne is the main setter for WKU and has tallied 630 assists.

The WKU defense is averaging 2.17 blocks per set this season and team-leader Matthews is third in the league at 1.24 blocks per set. Logan Kael leads in digs with 200 and Briggs is right behind with 195.

Marshall remains on the road for another Conference USA match at Middle Tennessee on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. eastern. The Herd then returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Oct. 18 to face league-leading Rice.
