Baseball Falls to Milwaukee in 2019 Opener, 5-3

Pastrana collects a pair of hits and an RBI in the loss

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Marshall baseball (0-1) falls in 2019 season opener in Kissimmee, Fla., Saturday evening to the Milwaukee Panthers (1-0), 5-3.
"We beat ourselves tonight," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said after the loss to Milwaukee. "Milwaukee had a big fourth inning with four runs on two hits. We played great defense, but we struck out too many times at the plate. Tomorrow is a new day and we have to get ready for two games."
Second baseman Geordon Blanton launched the first pitch of the season from Milwaukee's Jared Reklaitis over the left-field fence to give the Herd an early 1-0 advantage.
Herd starting pitcher Ryan Falls proceeded to pitch a flawless first two innings by retiring the Panthers in order for the Herd's first six outs of the ball game.
Milwaukee tied the game in the third with a leadoff homer by Joe Vyskocil. The Panthers struck for three more runs in the inning on another a hit and four free passes to lead the Herd 4-1 after three innings.
It didn't take the Herd long to answer back as right fielder Erik Rodriguez lead the fourth with a base knock and third baseman Shane Hanon drew a walk before catcher Reynaldo Pastrana singled home Rodriguez as Marshall cut the deficit to 4-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
After a scoreless bottom of the fourth for the Panthers and a scoreless top of the fifth for the Herd, Milwaukee struck for another run in the bottom of fifth to extend its lead back to three, 5-2.
Center fielder Andrew Zban knocked in shortstop Elvis Peralta in the top of the seventh to pull Marshall within two, 5-3, but the Herd didn't knock in another run in the final two innings as Milwaukee eventually took the game by the two-run margin.
The Herd bullpen of Philip Hoffman, Ryan Capuano, D'Andre Knight and Hunter Sexton combined to give up just one run across the last six innings of the game.
Pastrana was the lone Marshall player with a multi-hit effort going two-for-four with an RBI in the loss.
