KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Marshall baseball (1-2) split a pair of games on Saturday dropping its first game, 9-4, to George Mason and taking the second game over Pittsburgh, 7-2.

"It was a lot of fun and I'm proud of our guys," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said following the win over Pitt. "We didn't play well in the first game, but they came back out and played with a lot of passion in the second game."

George Mason
Marshall faced George Mason in game one of the day Saturday. Freshman pitcher Brady Choban made his Herd debut on the hill. Choban had a hard time settling in during his first outing as he gave up six earned runs on five walks and two hits in a third of an inning.

The Patriots plated another run in the second as they led the Herd 7-0 at the end of two innings.

After George Mason added another run in fifth, Marshall scored its first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth after a Shane Hannon leadoff double as Zach Inskeep singled him home one batter latter.

The Herd trailed 9-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, but scored three runs, one on an Elvis Peralta single, another on a Tucker Linder single and the final run on a Geordon Blanton fielder's choice.

Both teams went scoreless in the ninth as the Herd couldn't overcome the early deficit.

Marshall's bullpen had a strong showing as Garrett Priestly, Chris Fryer, Austen Martinez and Sam Boone gave up just three runs on five hits and striking out eight batters in 8.1 innings of work.

Pittsburgh
In the evening of the doubleheader, the Herd took on the Pittsburgh Panthers. Marshall struck early with Erik Rodriguez collecting a one-out triple to left in the top of the first and Hanon knocking him on a sac fly to give the Herd a 1-0 lead.

Linder legged out a one-out single up the middle and Evan Hurn walked to give the Herd two on and one out in the top of the second. Andrew Zban lined out to second, but after a passed ball moved the runners into scoring position, Blanton tripled them home to give the Herd a 3-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro played a large part in maintaining the Herd's 3-0 lead through five innings. Shapiro threw five shutout innings and struck out nine batters, including striking out the side in the second. In the fifth, the Panthers had runners had runners at first and third with one out, but he battled out of the jam by eventually stranding the runners at first and third. The nine strikeouts tied a career-high for Shapiro which he set on April 5, 2016, against West Virginia.

The Herd extended its lead to 4-0 as Peralta tripled and scored shortly later on a wild pitch to lead off the top of the sixth as the Herd scored a run in the final four innings of play, to go with an RBI-single by Reynaldo Pastrana in the seventh, Hurn scoring on a wild pitch in the eighth and Rodriguez collecting his career-high third RBI in the ninth.

The Panthers broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the sixth and added another run in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn't overcome the Marshall lead.

The Herd bullpen of Robert Kwiatkowski, Patrick Murphy and Michael Guerrero combined to give up just two runs on two hits and six walks in the last four innings to preserve the Herd's first win of the 2019 season.
