WILMINGTON, N.C. – Marshall (3-4) split its pair of games on Saturday at the Hughes Bros. Challenge, losing 5-1 to Indiana State and beating Iona in a fog shortened game 8-3.
Iona
The Herd battled Iona in the evening for the second time of the weekend.
"It was good to see Brady go out there after his first outing of the year, he didn't throw really well in it," 13th-year head coach Jeff Waggoner said. "It was good to see him come out and attack the zone. It was good to see him give us a chance to win today and it was a good confidence builder."
Brady Choban had a triumphant come back performance after lasting just 0.1 of an inning last weekend. Choban went 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out six batters.
"It felt good to come back out and throw well," Choban said of his second outing with the Herd. "It also felt good to help the guys out and get the win. All I'm trying to do every time out is keep us in the game."
Iona took the lead with a two-run blast in the bottom of the third to open the scoring.
Marshall answered quickly in the top of the fourth with an RBI single by Shane Hanon to score Geordon Blanton and Erik Rodriguez scoring on a wild pitch just one batter later to even the score at 2-2.
The Gaels benefitted from another homer in the bottom half of the fourth inning to regain the lead, 3-2.
The Herd had a massive fifth inning. Marshall scored five runs on four hits and benefitted from three Iona errors. Rodriguez and Hanon each had doubles in the inning bringing home one and two runs, respectively.
Choban exited the game with runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth. Sam Boone came in and recorded the final out of the inning, eventually earning the win.
Zach Inskeep hit a massive home run through the fog, his first dinger with the Herd, in the top of the sixth. Inskeep was the last batter before the game was called due to fog as Marshall defeated Iona 8-3.
Indiana State
Marshall faced Indiana State in the morning Saturday. The Herd struck first against Sycamores with back-to-back two-out doubles by Jaren Lovely and Tucker Linder to give the Herd a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Indiana State would answer the very next inning as Herd starter Joshua Shapiro would walk in a run. However, that would be the only run Shapiro would surrender in four innings of work as he gave up five hits, four walks and struck out two batters.
The Sycamores scored crucial runs at crucial times striking for a run in fifth and two more in the seventh to take the ballgame 4-1.
Marshall managed five base runners in the game on four hits and an Indiana State error.

"I want to see Zac McNeel come out and give us a chance to win tomorrow," Waggoner said on Sunday's contest with UNCW. "We need him to come out and throw strikes. Hopefully we have a better approach at the plate. Our defense has been good. We have to believe in the things we've done all week. We have to trust the things we've been working on."
