Williams collects second double-double of his career

HOUSTON, Texas – Marshall men's basketball's (13-12, 6-6 C-USA) second-half explosion not enough to overcome 17-point deficit in 74-69 loss in Houston to the Rice Owls (10-15, 5-7 C-USA) on Saturday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The trio of C.J. Burks, Jon Elmore and Jannson Williams combined for 51 of the Herd's 69 points.
Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the game for a double-double. Williams added three blocks to his stat line.
Burks added a game-high 24 points and tied for the game-high with 4 steals. The senior guard grabbed six rebounds in the contest.
Elmore dropped 13 points in the game to go with seven assists and eight rebounds.
The Herd came out of the gate on fire in the first five minutes of the contest making four of its first nine shots from the field and holding a 10-8 lead. At the under-12 timeout, Rice went on a 9-0 run to take a 20-16 lead and led the rest of the half.
The Owls led 40-31 at halftime and shot 44.8 percent from the field at the break as Marshall shot 33.3 percent. MU forced seven turnovers to only giving up the ball five times in the opening stanza of play.
Rice's hot shooting continued as it went on a 10-2 run to start the second half. However, Marshall answered with 12-0 run across the next four minutes to cut the deficit to 50-45 with 11:30 to go in the contest.
As the two teams went back-and-forth and the Herd ate away at the Owl lead, Williams buried a three with one minute to go in the game as Marshall trailed by one (70-69). But Rice ended the game on a 4-0 run as MU fell short in the comeback effort.

- C.J. Burks grabbed his 22nd game in double-figure scoring this season as Jon Elmore collected his 21st such game.
